Sandra is a well known and respected Economist within the financial services industry. After graduating from UCT with a Bachelor of Business Science (Economics Honours), specialising in Economics & Applied Business Statistics, she joined stockbrokers, Mathison & Hollidge as an Economist. She then moved onto Southern Life Asset Management, where she held the position of Senior Economist. Her last position was with Syfrets Asset Management – later FT NIB Investments – also as Chief Economist. Sandra then took a sabbatical from corporate life to work as an Independent Economist, during which time her clients
included SIM, Swedish Match, SRK Consulting, Bruvura, Woolworths Financial Services, as well as Noah Finance Innovation. During this time, Sandra also assisted with the launch of a small independent publishing house. Sandra has recently started her own consulting firm, where she specialises in strategic investment research - her recent clients are Fasset (Seta for finance, accounting, management consulting and other financial services), Mazars Moores Rowland, Noah Financial Innovation, Swedish Match, Naspers and 8 Ink Media.
Nic is an independent political analyst focussing on Southern Africa, particularly South Africa. He specialises in examining political and policy risks for financial markets. Until recently (from 1996 to end October 2004), Nic was a full-time political analyst with the global financial group, HSBC. For the last four years he has been an independent analyst, with clients ranging from global financial institutions and corporates, as well as governments and resource companies operating in Africa. Much of his work consists of writing articles and analyses, as well as giving talks, lectures and seminars in South Africa and abroad.
Nic’s major focus of the last few years has included Black Economic Empowerment – especially with regard to the Mining Charter, the Financial Services Charter, privatisation, Zimbabwe, status of the Ruling Alliance and opposition politics, socio-political effects of HIV/AIDS and consequences of government’s response, crime, the racial dimensions of politics and economics in South Africa, and the politics of monetary and fiscal policy, and an ongoing study of the evolving post-Gear macro-economic policy environment – particularly, as it relates to infrastructure plans and spending. Obviously, recent work has focused on the rise and victory of Jacob Zuma and those who have backed him. While working full-time in the market, Nic won five “Analyst of the Year” awards in the Financial Mail rankings in the “Political Trends and Industrial Relations” and “Other African Markets and Economies” categories.
